Tax Environment

The tax environment in Arizona is considered to be moderate due to:

  • No corporate franchise tax

  • Business inventories are exempt from property tax

  • Arizona imposes no worldwide unitary tax

  • Exempts machinery and equipment used directly in manufacturing, processing, fabricating, job printing, refining or metallurgical operations from both transaction privilege and use tax

  • Exempts machinery or equipment used in research and development from transaction privilege and use tax

  • Exempts chemicals used directly as part of an integrated system in manufacturing, mining, research and development, and certain other activities from transaction privilege and use tax

  • Provides for a 10% income tax credit on purchase price of real and personal property used to control or prevent pollution

  • Levies no state income tax on dividends from controlled subsidiaries in other states

Sales Tax

Arizona state sales tax is 5.6 percent. Each county levies an additional percentage; Maricopa County's is .7 percent. In addition, each city has its own sales tax; Peoria's is 1.8 percent for a total of 8.1 percent.

Payroll Tax

Payroll taxes are computed  based on employers and employees federal filing. Withholding for state payroll taxes is generally between 10 and 37 percent of federal withholding based on employees' income. Firms are also required to pay both unemployment and workmen's compensation insurance.
